An Exploratory Study of Open Source Software User Groups

| Abstract: |
Open source software (OSS) has rapidly become a popular area of study within the research community. Most of the research conducted so far has focused on the phenomenon of open source software development, rather than use. This field study investigates the role of OSS user groups and its impact on OSS use and OSS community in general. In this presentation, Dr. Jin will share insights gained from a participant observation study conducted in five Linux User Groups around Silicon Valley and San Francisco Bay Area during the time between 2002 and 2005. |

Dr. Leigh Jin is an associate professor of Information Systems at San Francisco State University. She earned her doctorate in Computer Information Systems from Georgia State University in 2002. She has conducted interpretive research on OSS adoption and use, on the Silicon Valley based start up companies, and on IT offshoring. Her teaching interests include Java Application Development, IT Project Management, and eCommerce Systems.
