Home automation is the use of one or more computers to control basic home appliances and other devic-es. Home appliances may become connected to form the Internet of Things (IoT), where devices can be configured, controlled and managed remotely. Low powered microcontrollers may provide customized functionality to replace expensive special-purpose products. In this project, we demonstrate how a DIY (do it yourself) burglar alarm can be built using parts for less than $40. By making use of the Arduino microcontroller and the Raspberry Pi, we have created a securi-ty system that gives push notifications to an Android phone when an intrusion is detected. Our system uses a magnetic contact door switch as a sensor connected to the Arduino microcontroller. On detection of interference, the relevant data is sent by the Arduino to the Raspberry Pi via Bluetooth. The Raspber-ry Pi transfers this data to a cloud service that is capable of sending the push notification requests to reg-istered Android devices. An Android application then takes care of giving push notifications on the phone by making use of the cloud serviceâ€™s REST API. The use of Bluetooth allows easy deployment of the system. The Raspberry Pi can be located at a central location in the house; it is not necessary to connect it with a USB cable to the Arduino microcontroller. We were able to implement a wireless solution for the data transfer between the Arduino and the Rasp-berry Pi using Bluetooth technology. The data is then used by the cloud service for the push notification feature.
