    Lab Fee

Students enrolled in the following courses are required to pay a $9.00 lab fee, per course:

CSC 620, CSC 630, CSC 640, CSC 656, CSC 665, CSC 668, CSC 671, CSC 675, CSC 690, and any 700 or 800 class that is paired with any of these 600 level courses.

The lab fee is used only for maintaining and improving the Computer Science Labs for the benefit of all Computer Science students. The lab fee pays for supplies (toner, paper, whiteboard markers, ...), iButton ComKeys, Software Licenses, when possible for lab assistants/lab managers, and equipment (monitors, computers, servers, memory upgrades, wireless, cabling, software, ...).

    Lab Printing Quota

Each Lab Fee paid per semester, entitles you to print 400 sheets from the CS Lab Printer during that semester. (I.E. - If you pay 2 lab fees, you have a total of 800 for your beginning Printing Quota.)

If you exhaust your quota and still want to print, all you need to do is pay another fee. Bring your Bursar Stamped Fee Sheet to the CS Dept Office and another 400 sheets will be added to your Print Quota.

For students not required to pay a lab fee, you are allotted a print quota of 160 for the semester. If you run out, you must pay a $9 lab fee to have your lab quota reset. It will be reset to 400.

    Lab Access - SCI 254/252

Students enrolled in Computer Science courses may obtain a free comkey from the Computer Science Department office (if lost, you will need to purchase a replacement key at the bookstore. The cost of the comkey is $7.99.). This key is good for your entire time here at SFSU, and must be returned when you no longer take computer science courses (for CS majors, when you graduate).

Here is the process for purchasing a ComKey:

    1. Go to the SFSU Bookstore's Gift and Supply Counter to obtain a printed barcode to be rung up at the register.
    2. Once you have paid for the key, return to the Gift and Supply Counter.
    3. Show your Receipt to the clerk who will then give you a comkey.

To get your purchased ComKey into the system or to obtain a new ComKey for the first time, please follow the steps below:

    1. Go to the Department Office, TH 906, (bring your ComKey if you just purchased one). A student assistant will be stationed there for the purpose of setting up your lab access for the year.
    2. Bring your Student ID Card. We need this for identification purposes and to check that you are enrolled in CS courses or you are a CS major. You must bring this with you.
    3. Your name will be entered and your ComKey will be activated.
    4. Verify that your ComKey is functioning correctly by going to the SCI 254 Lab door and putting the ComKey on the Access Plate. If the door lock clicks open your ComKey is functioniong correctly; if not, come back to the office and the student assistant will resolve the problem.

Note: ComKeys are deactivated every school year so if you cannot access the lab with your previously working ComKey, come to the Computer Science department to reactivate your ComKey.

    After Hours Access

You can access your lab accounts from home or another computer at any time by telneting into your account. If you need to come into the labs after hours, you need special permission from the department. You can obtain the permission forms in the department office. The permission form must be signed by your instructor, the Chair, and the Director of Operations for this college before you are allowed to access the lab before 7:00 am and after 10:00 pm. This process may take a couple days so try to plan ahead.

    Security Rules

    1. The lab doors are not to be propped open at any time.
    2. Each student must user their ComKey to gain entry to the labs.
    3. Note: If the labs are warm, open the windows and use the fans in SCI 254 to help cool the rooms down.
