E-Book readers are changing the way people read books in many ways. Unlike traditional books, E-Book Reader (Kindle, iBook etc.) can produce very valuable assessment and information of the book readers from the natural reading activity in a natural reading environment. It is possible to track minutes per page to assess reading comprehension level for individual reader and to find the most popular pages among books across many readers as well. Words that readers look up while reading book can be collected and analyzed. Such knowledge can be effectively used for assessment of reading level as well as seeds for many possible educational and fun activities. The goal of the Smart Reader project is to develop a reading model to predict difficulty in reading material. We attempt to study and research the reasons, which affect the reading patterns of people along with developing new tools to aid the readers. This project is an extension to the smart read project implemented by Salman Kahya under the supervision of Professor Ilmi Yoon as a master’s thesis and final project in 2013/2014. This extension aims to carry this mission forward, to add more features to the chrome extension (discussed later in this report) and to conduct research on readers to derive a reading model. We first attempted to use data already available in the database prior to starting this project but there were not enough users associated with unique books to group by for analysis. We were then forced to shift our strategy to focus groups. Analysis conducted on focus groups is explained next in detail. Finally, our Reading Model is presented based on the analysis along with future work and recommendations.
